How to Increase Student Learning with iReady Math Worksheets

Updated: Sep 6

Do you have this problem?

We all know the importance of repetition and practice when it comes to teaching math. When my school district adopted the iReady Math Curriculum, I was thrilled to see the rigorous question types. However, my gifted students flew through the lessons in under 10 minutes and my general education students needed twice as much practice! My solution... create more materials.

Product 1: Practice Resources

My practice resources include exit tickets, practice worksheets, and vocabulary activities. I created these resources after contemplating what my students needed to succeed. Have you asked yourself these same questions?

  1. How can I assess student learning during a lesson?

    1. I can use exit tickets! Two levels of exit tickets allowed me to check grade-level topics and challenge early finishers. Sometimes I copied these front and back and sometimes I projected them on our whiteboard. The Pear Deck application was a great tool for checking individual students' work during class slideshow lessons.

  2. How can I provide additional practice after students finish their workbook pages? How can I prepare students for lesson quizzes?

    1. I can use practice worksheets. Once again, two levels of practice worksheets make it possible to reteach material in small groups, prepare an easy, yet meaningful math center, or send as homework.

  3. How can I engage early finishers and gifted students?

    1. I can offer creative activities related to math vocabulary words. These vocab worksheets appeal to gifted learners - especially children who don't claim to be "math" students. They provide a short break from the black-and-white calculations of math lessons by sparking creative juices as students work with the language of math. #giftedandtalentedmath

Product 2: Vocabulary Posters

Originally, I created banners that matched each iReady lesson. After teachers requested "full-page" vocabulary cards so students could see examples more clearly, I created the English and Spanish posters. Both styles are included in the vocabulary downloads. #mathvocabulary

Product 3: Extension Slides

After adding paper and pencil practice to my math instruction, I still wanted to enrich the slideshow portion of our daily routine. That's when I created extension slides! This resource includes a PowerPoint file and Google Slides link (it is not intended for printable practice). Teachers love the learning intention slides included in every lesson. They also appreciate the vocabulary review that highlights the vocabulary posters from above. Using extension slides helped provide additional rigorous math questions for my students to practice during whole-group time. I love how these slides help students talk about math. #mathdiscussion

FREE Download: Make Learning Visible

Download free learning intentions for each math unit. I hang all of these inside page protectors so I can rotate the top page to the back as we progress through the year. It's super easy to update your math bulletin board!

Putting it All Together

  • In my 4th grade classroom, I hang the vocabulary banners and learning intentions on our math focus wall. These stay up all year and I only have to switch words out 5 times (for each of the 5 units).

  • I teach the curriculum slides during my whole-group lesson and use my extension slides at the end. This is especially helpful for my gifted learners who fly through the curriculum as well as my struggling students who need more practice.

  • In the afternoons, students complete a worksheet independently during centers. Some days they completed worksheets from the curriculum and other days I supplement with pages from my resource. This allows me to create a consistent center - one math practice worksheet every day. Some teachers use the worksheets as homework, too.

  • During intervention time, I print a stack of exit tickets and review skills with students who need additional practice.

  • Because there are two versions of the worksheets and exit tickets, it's easy to differentiate.
