This Design a Zoo Fraction Project tasks students with solving measurement problems, adding and subtracting fractions, and multiplying a whole number by a fraction. They will solidify their math skills through project-based learning. This independent project is perfect for engaging gifted learners. The elements offer choice and extend thinking. Take your students deeper by asking them to solve multi-step problems, design a zoo, think mathematically, and sketch an animal exhibit to showcase their work.

Check out the Contents of this 4th and 5th Grade Math Project:

✏️ 10 Multi-Step Problems (Most problems involve a full page of calculations. Tasks include converting measurements, adding and subtracting fractions, and multiplying a whole number by a fraction)

My 4th-grade students completed this project at the end of our measurement unit. It involves a balance of creativity and interest along with real-world problems. I have also given this independent project to gifted students as an extension activity.

Hear From Educators Like You!

⭐️ “I used the Design a Zoo Habitat as an extension activity near the end of our 4th grade unit on fractions (I offered it as a choice, along with another extension activity about quilts and fractions).  My students were super engaged with the Zoo Habitat activity!  This resource is well-designed to include elements of choice and allow creativity.  I found the level to be just right to provide some challenges while being accessible to my students.  They were able to work collaboratively to complete much of the activity, leaving me free to help struggling students.  The interest in the "project" was sustained over days, and students were eager to talk about their animals and souvenirs. I appreciated that the resource is offered in both digital and PDF formats and that it includes a scoring rubric and sample responses.  I couldn't be happier with this purchase!”

⭐️ “This was perfect for some "real world" application. My students had fun with this!”
